{"id":603,"date":"2018-09-18T09:26:13","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T06:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.arcak.net\/?p=597"},"modified":"2018-09-18T15:04:53","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T12:04:53","slug":"vmware-vsan-capacity-sizing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.arcak.net\/index.php\/2018\/09\/18\/vmware-vsan-capacity-sizing\/","title":{"rendered":"VMware vSan Capacity Sizing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You will naturally like to see what equipment you need and what enhancements you can make with these needs before you invest for a new <strong>vSan<\/strong> Environment<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are several manufacturer tools that I share links with below that you can perform automatically.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Click\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vsansizer.vmware.com\/\">here<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for <strong>vSan Readynode Sizer <\/strong>and <a href=\"https:\/\/mainstayadvisor.com\/go\/emc\/vxrail\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> for\u00a0<strong>Vxrail Xpress Sizer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">So what should you do if you want to do an average calculation without having to depend on these tools?<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let&#8217;s say the capacity you need is <strong>10 TB<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We must multiply this capacity by the following coefficients, depending on the type of <strong>RAID<\/strong> desired. As I mentioned in the my previous article <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.arcak.net\/index.php\/en\/2018\/08\/30\/vmware-vsan-storage-policy-based-management-spbm\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>,<strong>\u00a0RAID<\/strong>\u00a0types in<strong>\u00a0vSAN<\/strong> <strong>environment <\/strong>maybe implemented as<strong> Datastore<\/strong> <strong>Default<\/strong>, <strong>per-VM<\/strong> and <strong>per<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>vmdk<\/strong>. So when you do these calculations put\u00a0you will have <strong>X VM<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>RAID, 5x VM<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>RAID5 <\/strong>into account to\u00a0achieve more accurate results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>RAID coefficients;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>RAID1<\/strong> = 2 (<strong>Min.<\/strong> 3 server or 2 servers and Witness node)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>RAID5<\/strong> = 1.33 (<strong>Min.<\/strong> 4 Server and All-Flash)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ra\u0131d6<\/strong> = 1.25 (<strong>Min.<\/strong> 6 server and All-Flash)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Let&#8217;s say we have <strong>10TB<\/strong> net capacity requirement with <strong>RAID1<\/strong> and <strong>all-flash<\/strong>. Only the <strong>All-Flash<\/strong> environment supports\u00a0<strong>Deduplication and Compression<\/strong> feature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>10TB x 2 = 20TB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Deduplication &amp; Compression<\/strong> coefficients can be used between <strong>1.5<\/strong> <strong>a<\/strong>nd <strong>2<\/strong> depending on the data type. This property is an achievement unlike the raid, so the value obtained in the previous calculation is divided into this coefficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Consider it <strong>1.5<\/strong>, given that the data is not well to be deduped and compressed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>20TB\/1.5 = 13.33 TB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is not recommended to fill the <strong>vSAN<\/strong> environment more than <strong>70%<\/strong>, so <strong>30% Slack Space<\/strong> must be added just incase on the calculated capacity. (The tests I made in the test environment continued to operate\u00a0 even in 95% of the capacity. <strong>Testing in Production environment is not recommended!<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>13.33 tb x 1.30 = 17.33 TB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Considering that capacity is intended to be used in three servers;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>17.33 TB\/3 = 5.78<\/strong> TB The capacity needed per server is needed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This<strong> 5.78 <\/strong>TB capacity can be supplied with discs of various sizes according to the need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>More than 1 disk group<\/strong> having <strong>more than 1 capacity disks<\/strong> are recommended for both security and performance reasons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You will naturally like to see what equipment you need and what enhancements you can make with these needs before you invest for a new vSan Environment There are several manufacturer tools that I share links with below that you can perform automatically.
